The basic ideology behind the difference is 4×2 means a four-wheeled vehicle has the power output via only two wheels, either the front or back. 4×4 means a four-wheeler is powering all the four wheels at the same time. The modern-day supercars and standard automobile use 4×2 setup as it is lightweight and provides better manoeuvre ability.  4× 4 is used on heavy vehicles such as jeeps and pickup trucks mainly for its load capacity and substantial nature providing more robust pickup and traction. Most rally cars use four-wheel drives to aid in better stability and traction across gravel surface so they can hold a better line off the corners. Bigger SUVs like Mercedes G wagon have a switchable four-wheel drive for better fuel economy and steering lightness. Four-wheel drive can be sometimes confused with all-wheel drive, which is both very different in working.


Two-wheeled drive cars usually for carrying out family errands use two-wheel drive mainly the front wheels, as manufacturing cost reduces and vehicle cost, in turn, is lesser than average, hence now affordable to the public masses. Track cars or sports cars use the two-wheel drive as well, but in the format of rear-wheel drive mostly, this ensures that the vehicle undergoes oversteer rather than understeer. Oversteer results in power slides which are controllable and very elegant to look at, but understeer may cause a catastrophically accident wherein the driver is not able to control the steering due to lack of feedback.

Off-road terrains and muddy course result in slippage and traction loss in case of two-wheel drive cars, and these four-wheel-drive cars come in handy. Loss in traction results in the vehicle getting stuck and all havoc. Four-wheel drive cars have a differential which sends in power to individual wheels this siding for better traction and better grip on loose gravel. They even include high and low range gearboxes for driving all four wheels, which aides in crawling over huge inclined surfaces. Most of the jeeps and SUVs are this used to tackle off-road terrains due to this capability.


Most of the manufacturers indulge themselves in only producing two-wheel-drive cars for a significant reason, the reason being cost. Manufacturing cost can go up to twice while converting a two-wheel drive car into a four-wheel-drive car. Most of the customers worldwide use their vehicles ( cars) for daily commute in the urban jungle where only transportation is a fundamental priority, hence. In contrast, buying must of the customers are biased over the budget and economy of a vehicle. If this exceeds, then the number of people buying the vehicle decreases. But nowadays most of the four-wheel-drive cars are also becoming affordable and cheaper to manufacture. But most of the four-wheel-drive cars are not used to their full potential as most of them are used on urban commutes, or school runs.
